Lost ...

and found...after some erratic driving and waste of petrol... My son is a junior scout leader and, although I admire him for being so helpful and patient with the little “beavers”, “cubs” etc, this entails for me driving him around to take him to the most impossible locations for their hiking, camping etc.
Yesterday was one of those evenings in which he got home in the afternoon and had to meet in the middle of the Yorkshire Wolds to guide a hiking expedition. Now, although I’ve lived in the area for almost ten years, I don’t know the whole countryside around here yet and I’m very bad with maps as well, especially maps drawn by scouts!

So after many miles and many wrong turning up and down the hills I managed to drop him at the starting point. The problem was going back. I hadn’t really paid attention to the different little roads we took in our frenzy to get to the meeting point on time. My daughter and I were all of a sudden LOST! In the middle of nowhere. No signs, no cars or human beings in sight and no mobile phone reception of course!

But then we found this. The Lonely Old (and rusty) Post Box. It’s a rather known landmark around here so we knew we were not far from civilization!
Got home just in time to drive in the opposite direction to pick him up at the end of the hiking, but this time we knew the way!

Your son is doing a fantastic job. My husband is a Cub leader and really struggles to get help.
I am so glad you found your way back.

Stressful! At least you got some fab pictures out of it :)

Good for him - my boys are both in the Scouts over here - they love it, they are learning so much and we get to see such beautiful parts of Emilia Romagna - not the Yorkshire Dales but still breathtakingly beautiful!

He does a great job! I have wonderful memories of those sort of trips during my time with the Brownies. I realise now we were often only 2 miles from home but at the time I thought we were hundreds of miles away in the outback!

I've been lost more times than I care to mention, and it is not fun at all. I have a terrible sense of direction, so I have to really be careful, and always try to have a map with me. I'm glad you were able to find a landmark and find your way!

Despite the stress and loss of fuel, I think it was worth it for the photos! Love that old post box!

I can't read maps and I can't even get those electronic map thingies in the cars to work for me! I'm forever getting lost. LOL

I'm crap with maps, I always get lost. But I've also got a terrible fault : that of hating asking for directions. So I insist on maps or on my orienteering skills and...I go on getting lost!
Anyhow, eventually, I've always found the way back home. Safe and Sound!
Have a very good day!
P.S. Nice original post!

At least you had some pleasant countryside to drive around! (Being lost round here wouldn't be as pleasant...)

I'm just glad this didn't happen to you in the dark!

@Jane: Thanks, he seems to like it at the moment. I think it’s something good for him and helps him to keep away from “trouble”. Your husband must be a very patient man!!!

@ModernMom; It wasn’t bad because if wasn’t dark yet. Otherwise….

@Kathryn: Emilia Romagna is beautiful as well. In my part of Italy, Scouts practically do not exist and I don’t know why…Every kid seems to play volleyball and that’s all!

@Elizabeth: Thanks. I love the post box as well! Hugs to you as well.

@Rosie: I think hiking and camping are the best activities for Scouts and Brownies. I regret I didn’t have that experience when I was a child….

@Beth: I feel totally lost when I don’t have my mobile phone or it’s out of reach. Imagine when I’m really lost and the phone does not work!

@Mervat: My daughter took the photos. I was too busy to find the way back home!

@Missie: I don’t like the SatNav thing either and I’ll never get one! Awful things…maybe useful though?

@Maria Grazia: My kids are very good at finding the way. Both my husband and I are hopeless…Talking about parents’ guidance!

@The Dotterel: I don’t know your area well, but I’m sure there must be some pretty spots as well. Aren’t you not far from Lincoln?

Valeria: Ciao Vale, ricambio l’abbraccio. Certo che Verona non e’ da meno!

@Hilda: I would have been desperate in the dark. I cannot see well in the dark so it would have a disaster!!!

Love the picture of the postbox. I'm really good at finding my way but for some reason I'm bad at giving directions. I think it is because I never know the name of the street or highway - always "turn at the red house" or the freeway closest to the Bay.

Is the post box still active?
