Quality Time in Lyme

Just a few days holidays but in one of the most beautiful locations in the United Kingdom. Situated in the South West of Dorset, England, Lyme Regis is an historic unspoiled seaside resort and fishing port on the world famous Cobb harbour.

The Cobb is an important feature in Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion (1818) and in the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman, based on the 1969 novel of the same name by local writer John Fowles.

Surrounded by beautiful coastlines and countryside, the area has now been awarded World Heritage Site Status; famous for its geology and fossil finds.

The cliffs around Lyme Regis constantly crumble and slip into the sea, revealing fossils from the ancient Jurassic past of 180 million years ago. The best experience in Lyme Regis is taking a fossil hunting walk organized by the Museum to discover the fossilised remains of giant ichthyosaur, plesiosaur, belemnites and ammonites that can be found on the beaches.

Families return time and again to search with Paddy Howe, the Museum geologist and his colleague Chris among the sand and rocks for fossils that have been washed-down onto the beach. For adult and children alike it’s an unforgettable experience.

(Paddy at work. But you will get your fingers dirty too, don't worry!)

Your fossil walk ticket gives you free access to the museum where you will be able to see displays of rare fossils, learn all about Mary Anning, the famous early palaeontologist who once lived on the site of the museum and much, much more.

This is Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth, not far from Lyme. It was a film location too. In Nanny McPhee (2005), the children go for a picnic on the beach at Durdle Door. Scenes from the film Wilde (1997) starring Stephen Fry and from the film Far from The Madding Crowd (1967) were shot here.

Going fossil hunting!

I'm going to the Jurassic Coast for a couple of days, precisely to Lyme Regis, a place I've been wanting to visit since I read "Remarkable Creatures" by Tracy Chevalier. I was so upset about the car that my husband decided to get me this surprise mini-holiday to cheer me up. I will be back next week just in time to find out how much the repair will cost. See you later, friends!

London Calling

Hi Everybody, Thanks for commenting even though I haven’t been so “active” on blogger recently. Although I’ve been working throughout the summer and I haven’t been away from England I’ve still managed to cut out a couple of nice holiday moments for myself and my family. My daughter and I just had a great long weekend in London where we met my lovely auntie, my cousins and their children from Italy. Although we were in 8 around the busy streets of London we had a lot of fund. The kids were enthusiastic, but my auntie was the happiest of all to be finally in London. She had such a hard life in the past few years and she really deserves a bit of fun.

We hit on all the most famous sightseeing places in London, our feet were killing us but we kept on walking. Now I leave you with a series of photos my daughter took just to show you London from our kids’ perspective. Enjoy! Above, a bit of rest in the park just after visiting the Queen's Residence! Pity she wasn't in!!!

Almost obsolete to make calls, but still an excellent symbol of London!

Trafalgar Square, the base of Nelson's Column. They tried to ride the black lions but they were too slippery!

English breakfast. What a treat!!! Surely the best of the trip!

Time to get your head chopped????

Miles and miles of Tube travelling ....

Delicious cakes at Harrod's. The kids were told off for taking this picture. So sad!

Not sure why we ended up here, but everybody seemed to be happy....

Lacoste fashion in Knightbridge, although none of us bought this....

And finally a pink cub back to the station. Cute, isn'it???

Clouds over Italy

(an "Italian" fluffy cloud)

Thanks for all your messages on my previous post. Fortunately no new shakes have been felt so we all hope it was just a one off scare.

I'm now back in York since a couple of days and the weather has been beautiful so this makes my return to daily life a bit easier. Although when I go to Italy after a while I feel "abroad" at first, I quickly get used to the lifestyle there and then I find it harder to leave.

(an "angry cloud": is storm coming?)

I had two lovely weeks in my home town, although I ate too much, drank too many cocktails and slept too little! It was fantastic to catch up with my friends. It is so different from here. Although I like Britain, I do not feel I’ve managed to forge really deep friendships with people here. I think it’s mainly because I keep on comparing these relatively “new” friends here to my “old” Italian friends who I’ve known all my life.

I will get back on track soon but for the moment I miss Italy ever so much! And these dark clouds don’t make it look less appealing.

(the storm is here but will be over soon. See that blue sky over there?)
