(RESIGNED - The Italian crowd celebrating in front of the Italian Parliament)Silvio Berlusconi resigned as prime minister tonight at 21.43 after the Italian Parliament approved on a package of austerity measures. His "reign" (government) lasted 1284 days.
Demonstrators chanting "resign, resign, resign" had gathered outside parliament and Berlusconi's car was pelted with coins as it drove to the presidential palace.
This is the end of an era. Let's hope it's the start of a new positive one. Let's hope that Italy can make it. Let's hope that something will really changes in the future both for Italy and Europe. Whatever happens now it will take a long time. And the Italian people, after tonight's brief euforic moments, will start complaining again, they will easily get fed up with the interim government, then with the auterity measures and then with the new permanent governement (whenever this is going to happen). I hope I'm wrong.
In the meanwhile, le roi est "mort", vive l'Italie!

Let's hope it will really be the start of a new positive one... we sure do hope so... but: how?? How can it be a new, positive era, when all the politicians are "same old, same old"? There is no one new, no one better. They are all the same. :(
I think the only people who will miss Berlusconi will be the newspapers and the stand-up comedians.
I hope that Italy finally gets the leader it deserves.
@Kia: I partially agree with you there, but at the moment what's really important is that the main rotten apple has gone!
@Steve: ...and his cronies of course and there are still quite a lot of them around unfortunately!
@Jane: Thanks. Unfortunately Italy had the leader they deserved as they voted for him! I sincerely hope something is going to change, specially in the conscience and in the mind of my people from now on. Ciao
Such a relief he has gone. Now we must cross our fingers and hope for a better future!! How can such a buffoon have managed to do so well in his life? that's what I wonder.
It's been fascinating watching from the sidelines, what a weird world we live in.
He was a clown, I agree. And I am pretty happy he is gone. But he didn't do it all alone, every other politician was with him in ruining Italy. I am much more disappointed in the "so called" Opposizione (opposition to what? They agreed with B. with everything!). I am truly regretting my votes! I would have thought the opposition parties would have learnt their lesson. Obviously not, and now 41% Italy's voters, according to a recent poll, either won't vote or do not know who to support... I am one of them.
Let's just hope Monti's reforms don't screw people too hard. But knowing our "beloved" politicians, I would not count on it.
Here's to hoping that this black cloud has a silver lining.
Sorry for the rumbling :) the gloomy weather is getting on my brain ;)
Hope you are having a lovely autumn day!
