The End of the Millennium

Almost two thousand pages later and my Millennium is finished.

Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson wrote novels, for fun, in his spare time. He died suddenly in November 2004, leaving three unpublished books, that are known as the Millennium Trilogy: The Girls With The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

It follows the lives of the unlikely heroine Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist. In this trilogy, Salander fights for her civil freedom and takes revenge on certain people who have harmed her in the past. Armed with phenomenal hacking skills and tenacity to live, Salander might fight the system and everyone who wants her to stay down. Mikael Blomvist enlists her help to uncover government conspiracies and together they fight the dominating power.

These three books are among some of the most interesting ones I have read this year. Translated from Swedish, the three books open my eyes to a new setting; I was bored with crime novels set in North America or in the UK and this series provided a refreshing change from that. Also, I have always been fascinated by the Scandinavian countries and especially by Sweden and this trilogy offers a good overview of life in the modern Swedish society (and politics)

Larsson has created a very intriguing heroine. She is a victim but not victimised; she is vengeful but not cold-blooded; she is small but not weak; she deserves empathy but not sympathy. Lisbeth resides in a critical balance between these dialectics. This is what makes her an unlikely heroine. She is nothing cliché. At some points she overshadows Blomkvist, but the two main characters both have their own charms in the trilogy. Blomkvist is not a perfect hero, which only serves to make him more convincing as a human being. The books are a bit slow in some points and over-descriptive in others due to that fact – think - that Larsson was a journalist and not a novelist. Some parts could have needed an abundant editing and some repetitions would have surely not been there if Larsson would be still alive now.

That said, I think this series is worth reading, especially the first book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It’s a very dark and strong story, very shocking and engrossing at the same time. But never boring. I’m very sad to have to say farewell to Lisbeth Salander who kept me company for many interesting nights. I will devote myself to their cinematographic versions, the Swedish films of course, before Hollywood get hold of the film rights and make of George Clooney and Scarlet Johansson the unlikely versions of Lisbeth and Kalle!

Hello there! Buona domenica! It's cloudy and greyish here so I can imagine I'm in England... joking. I hope you're ok , A. My husbands read the three novels and , especially liked the first one too. Not my cup of tea, as you can imagine.
Big Hug! Ciao!

I haven't read any of his books but these three have been recommended to me by various people now so may give them a go.

Thanks you again for the Lego - built them yesterday and marvel at how well kept and clean the pieces are! ;-)

Hi, very nice description! Anything that is multicultural is under my circle of attention. Sadly, I do not seem to find much time to read like I used to in the past. So, lucky you! Enjoy your readings!

And the pairing of Clooney and Johansson...pretty...likely!

@MG: Cool and rather cloudy here as well. We hat our spring last week. Now we're waiting for our summer week!!! I found the books rather interesting because they are different from all what I read before. And you know that I tend to get bored if I always read the same stuff. Ciao a te!

@Steve: If you like strong thrillers, Steve, these are for you. Glad the Lego arrived safe and sound. Hope there were no pieces missing! Ciao.

@Inspired: Such a pity when you cannot find the time to read, but I understand the problem. It took me quite a long time to read the last book of the trilogy as I had a lot of work on! As much as I like George Clooney, I'm not sure that he and Johansson would do well in an adpatation of Larsson's books! Ciao!

My favaourite of the three is the middle one - The Girl Who PLayed With Fire. There was an article about Larsson is The Sunday Times which claims his heroine is based on Pippi Longstocking. I used to love that when I was a little girl.

@Michelle; As I said, it's worth reading, especially because it is a bit different...

@Jane: Yes, I agree, I've been thinking of Pippi reading the books. Like her Lisbeth is on her own fighting the establishment. Of course all the rest is much stronger!

Antonella, you and I seem to read some of the same books. I read and reviewed the first one of the trilogy about this time last year (blog link http://fromseatomountains.blogspot.com/2009/05/girl-with-dragon-tattoo-book.html)

I went on to read the second one but not the third. The books were somehow too dark for me.

Have only managed the first book

@Darla: I remembered your review (and my comment too) whilst reading the first book, Darla. I too found the English translation of the first book a bit 'forced' and not always flowing. I think it got better in the next two. Found the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo very "strong" and shocking in some parts but worth reading. Got really attached to the Lisbeth character all the way through. Ciao.

@Mo: The Millennium is not everybody's cup of tea, I understand, Mo...Ciao.

I haven't read any of these books, but after your review I am quite curious. Thanks, have a lovely day!

@Laine: Try to persevere, beyond the first very descriptive part it gets really gripping...and very shocking too!!!

@Kia: As I said above, this trilogy is not everybody's cup of tea, but I think it's worth reading as it depicts teh Swedish culture and way of life in a way I didn't know before. Ciao a te!

There was a few missing pieces in the Lego but restoring sets is part of the fun. I have loads of spare pieces plus lots of online contacts and suppliers for spare parts so both sets are now 100% complete. Thank you!

@Steve: I suspected there were a few pieces missing, hope you didn't have to spend money on spares! Glad they're complete now. Ciao.
