For the love of ...

…my son I went to a football match for the first time in my life. I mean, a proper football match, not one of my son’s or daughter’s usual Saturday games. It was part of his 16th birthday present and his father was supposed to take him. But unfortunately (and conveniently) last Tuesday evening daddy was late or stuck in traffic (or both?) and it was up to me to take over this duty.

I was actually feeling rather unwell and I was hoping that being the evening so cold my son would desist too. But then I remembered a post I had read in lovely Jane’s blog The Small Fabric Of My Life about creating good memories for our children and I decide to take him. After all, it was only Leeds and there was too much to drive.

Covered with 5 layers of clothing there I was among shouting and chanting fans. My son’s favourite team lost but it was a good match (so he said at least!) and to tell the truth I quite enjoyed it. Or maybe I just enjoyed a bit of bonding with my very demanding teenage son.

I hate watching football on the Tv, Hate it, even if it's a big match. however, get to the stadium and I love it.

Well, your son must have appreciated your going very much. He must be proud of you! Brave Antonella! I wouldn't dare go to a football stadium. I can't stand crowded places, shouting people, noisy events and ... I don't understand at all what is really happening in the pitch! Would I go for one of my sons' love? Mmmm... fortunately, it has never occurred that I was asked. Their father is such an enthusiastic football fan, he never misses one of their matches and would love to go to the stadium with them. So I was lucky! I'm their personal driver on many other occasions. Hope it is enough.

I'm with Heather on this one - you've got to be there! (And my, Elland Road's changed a bit since I was last there - watching the Queen being driven round the perimeter 1977!)

Memories are so important. Wait till you hear the version you grandkids will tell you about the day as daddy recalls it.

I'm glad you went despite everything against it. I'm a firm believer that relationships are made — they don't just happen. You have just given your son a wonderful childhood memory which he will fondly look back on when he's our age and older. (HUGS)

I think it is important to do these things. I went to a yoga class wiht my 18-year-old son last Wednesday. That will be one for the memory bank as he was the only man there and during the relaxation we were both next to a very loud snorer. It was the first time we had laughed togeteh rin a long time.

The things we do for our kids, right? I'm with the others who commented, this kind of evening is a memory maker and worthwhile even if you had to bundle up.

Thanks for the welcome back :-) Glad the match turned out to be a good experience!!

Like the Dotterel I also went to Elland Road in 1977 to see the Queen. It was her silver jubilee and as I remember all the 10 yr old kids in Leeds got to go and see her, so he must be the same age as me!

Nice to see you on the pic!

I'm definitely of the same opinion as The Dotterel and Heather...it's the commentary that I can't cope with when watching a TV match. However I used to enjoy going to see Nottingham Forest once in a while as a student. Am thinking about taking my eldest who's 8 to see Ipswich town. You've most definitely whet my appetite...will report back if I do :-)

It is lovely to see you and your son! You did well. I have been in exactly the same situation and have bitten the bullet and taken my children to see their favourite team play their last match for the year(whilst hubby was on an overseas conference). The heat was stifling but we did it anyway.

Best wishes,
Mervat
