I shot the Sheriff ...

The other day in York, in front of the Guildhall, there was a fundraising event in aid of the Lord Mayor's and Sheriff's Charities. For 50p or £1 you could throw wet sponges at the Mayor and Sheriff of York in turn.

My daughter took advantage of the chance of “shooting” a politician (or two) and here she is at work. She was so good at throwing that the Mayor’s servants offered her extra sponges for free.

During the year of office, the Lord Mayor also supports two local charities. This year the charities that will benefit from the fundraising activities are York Against Cancer and the Brunswick Organic Nursery.

York's Lord Mayor is second only to the Lord Mayor of London in precedence and its Sheriff holds the oldest office of Sheriff in England and Wales.

I wouldn't be tempted to "shoot" York's Lord Mayor not even with wet sponges as he's quite a nice guy! If it were Gordon Brown on the other end .....

Great post! Can you imagine how successful it would be here in Italy? How many people dream to shoot something -something heavier than wet sponges- to our politicians? The queue would be endless!

Your Lord Mayor is apparently a good sport. Love the last picture.

What a cool politician! How much fun that must have been. I'm not sure if any of these uptight Americans would do the same! I have quite a few I would like to throw things at! Graet post!!!

Just popped in to wish you a very happy weekend! :) I'm a bit envious, you know? ;) But maybe I'll get to go too, I'd love it, a little trip to London next spring. Fingers crossed! I've been there just once when I was 15 y/o. Ages ago! Hugs! xoxo

LOL! This is so cute!

I can't imagine any of our politicians doing the same thing. Actually, they shouldn't or people are likely to use rocks rather than soft sponges. Me included.

Hi Antonella, He looks a nice man. Mind you, I wonder if we did that to many of our hopeless politions they would be quite happy as he was, even for charity. I think the people of this country would be fighting over who threw the first sponge were Gordon Brown sitting there...lol!

Love and Hugs

Hilarious! I am sure that people would pay in a very long line to throw a wet sponge, rotten tomatoes, and eggs at the Mayor of L.A. It would be a great way to raise money for the failing economy of California. Maybe Arnold Schwartzenager would be up for it too? Love it!!
