Mutton dressed as Lamb?

Last Friday in a moment of absolutely madness I bought myself a leather jacket (see above, although it looks much better "live" than in the picture!). I’ve wanted a leather jacket for quite a long time but never got one. I’m not very good at buying clothes for myself, mainly because I don’t have much time to shop around and therefore I end up with nice items but not matching together. I’m also very susceptible to my family’s opinions so to be sure I wear rather “normal” (not to say plain clothes). Also working from home does not encourage me to get “tarted up” (as my son says) unless I go out for an interpreting job or for an evening out. To cut a long story short, I’m here looking at my new leather jacket and I’m in a dilemma: Am I too old for it? Shall I return it to the shop? It’s lovely and soft and beautifully cut but all in all it looks like a biker’s jacket and maybe it’s a bit too “young” for me. As notSupermum would say, I’m on the wrong side of 40 and I wonder if I could run the risk of being the so called “mutton dressed as lamb”.
Do you think there is an age limit for wearing leather jackets?

No! Absolutely no, if you like it and you are comfy with it :)
My in-laws will be here only at 10:30 PM (long story) so maybe I'll be able to send you an e-mail after dinner. Hugs! :)

There had better not be. I'm 46, and I have several! LOL

I LOVE leather jackets, and I've had quite a few over the years. I still have an Eisenhower style jacket that has shoulder pads. Very 80's, and I wore it to the B-52's concert a while back. I have one that's like a suit jacket, and one that's similar but a little longer. I even have a biker jacket with all the zippers for the rare occasion I take a motorcycle ride with Ken.

Leather is always a classic, and will last for years. All my leather jackets are black, but I love the dark brown of yours. I think it's totally cool, so wear it with joy and pride! :)

Hugs, Beth

First of all, who is notSuperman? And is he in the market for a notSupermum? He he...

Second, I would think a leather jacket is an investment buy and it if suits you is an ageless piece of clothing. But then, I am fashionably challenged, so you may wish to ignore anything I tell you :-(

@Yummy Mummy: Thanks Robin, I wish my hubby and kids would share your faith in me!!!

@Kia: Well, I like it and it’s very comfortable. I just look different and I’m not used to it. Hugs to you as well.

@Beth: Well, I say. What a great piece of encouragement from you, thanks!
Mine is pitch black too. I think the light makes it look dark brown! Ciao.

@Sugar: Thanks Sugar! I’m sure you can fit in one! Get one so we can go around together like the Blues Brothers!

@notSupermum: Gosh, my bad spelling! I was meant to write your name! I’ll change it straight away! You’re the one who considers herself “on the other side of 40”. Or not? Yes, I think I will consider it an investment. Sound better like that. Thanks.

Definitely not!!!

I've been wanting a leather jacket too but there's just absolutely no excuse for me to buy one because of our climate. I'm so envious!

Your jacket looks so soft!

I'm not a regular visitor, just passing by as I have seen your name several times in Mo's blog (Fresh Eyes on London) and caught my attention because I have studied and lived in Perugia, so I came here to confirm you're Italian :)

I've worked as a translator myself, but for the last 6 years I've been busy with other things besides foreign languages.

Quindi, devo dire che ogni età avrà i suoi limiti però una donna italiana non dovrebbe mai aver dei dubbi su quello che deve indossare! :)

So, sure, keep your fabulous jacket and wear it like there's no tomorrow!

I do not believe there is an age limit on leather. Now, I think I am too old for motorcycle leather. But I do think a classic leather jacket is ageless.

I see no age limit, I think it has more to do with where and when you wear it and what your wear it with.

Hello Antonella, your leather jacket looks wonderful, I don't think there's any age & I'm sure you're going to love it & enjoy it for several years. It's going to look wonderful with tons of things.

Ma va! Starai benissimo, altro che montoni e agnelli!! Anche io ho ceduto alla moda del giubbino di pelle (finta!), l'ho preso alla Sisley, nero e mi piace un sacco!
Vogliamo la foto!!! Facce vedé come ti sta!!!

@Hilda: Here instead it’s probably still too cold for a leather jacket! Winder coats should always be at hand!

@Imogen: Thanks, nice to get approved by a professional! Ciao.

@Yasmin: Can you believe that I haven’t decided yet? I have within today as I’m going to Italy tomorrow.

@ Monsal Varga: Thanks for popping in. Perugia is a beautiful place and I hope you liked it there. Io ho di dubbi su ciò che indosso ne ho in abbondanza in quanto abito da quasi 15 anni qui nel Regno Unito!

@La Belette: That’s what I meant. Is this one too “biker-like”?

@Darla: That’s true. I’m not very good at putting outfits together and I fear I’d look a bit silly!

@Elizabeth: Yes, it is lovely and soft. Just I do not know how much wear I would get from it considering the British weather and but current clothes.

@Valeria: Grazie, cara.

Antonella, this is a great jacket as it looks like it has personality. I would team it with dark blue jeans or a black knee-length pencil skirt and heels and you would look fabulous! Is there any chance we may see you in this?
