Help! I need a caffeine fix!

I don’t drink lots of coffee and I don’t like it plain - just give me macchiato, cappuccino and latte every time and I’m happy – so I did not expect this kind of withdrawal symptoms. I’m used to headaches so that’s not so bad.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the overwhelming sleepiness. I just can’t get enough sleep. As a devout coffee drinker, I accepted the fact that I would never have the most normal sleeping patterns and I accept that. I got work done. I am a night owl and I enjoy that. Now it seems as though I cannot stay awake past 10 pm without wanting to doze off or read a book without getting very tired.

I know it seems like for someone who hasn’t had coffee in six days (and counting) these are some pretty broad statements, but caffeine withdrawal is, from what I understand, a very quick thing to take full effect.
I don’t know how I’m going to manage until Easter day, especially as during my last week of coffee abstinence I will be in Italy where I usually spend most of my time visiting friends and family (who offer you espressos all the time and get offended if you decline them!) or meeting them in our favourite coffee bar!

To cheer myself up I took some photos of the first flowers in my garden. I think they are pretty nice, especially as I haven’t looked after them or even planted them, at least not since a very long time!

I was never a coffee drinker, but I loved my Diet Pepsi! I cut that a couple of years ago, and once I got over the initial withdrawal symptoms, I was fine. I still have one once in a while, and WOW, does it ever give me a boost! LOL

Hugs, Beth

Oh dear. Good luck and stay strong, Antonella! I don't know how you can do it! The most I've done is limit my intake to two mugs maximum and only before noon.

Your 'surprise' flowers are beautiful and I hope they helped cheer you up!

I once had caffeine withdrawal and the effect was awful - much worse than I had expected it to be. It does wear off though, and you should have a spring in your step once the headaches stop. Good luck!

I have a GREAT idea! Take me with you to Italy, and I will drink all the coffee for you! :-D

I gave up coffee when I was pregnant - just went off it. I noticed that I had so much more energy in the afternoons when the headaches had gone.
As for the Brazilian night I would say use the colours of the flag - yellows and greens and maybe a flouncy skirt. Have a great time.

I will be writing a post on coffee & caffeine very soon. Suffice to say I know the feeling very well and I sympathise with you! Pictures of flowers are just lovely.

Good luck with the no-coffee thing! Thanks for visiting and your nice comments! Funnily we kind of reversed roles, you know ...you're Italian in Yorkshire, I'm Yorkshire in Italy! heehee!

I used to drink a lot of real coffee and then gave it up, now i can't drink much coffee at all, it makes me hyper and stops me sleeping. So keep going though I can imagine it will be a challenge in italy.... Love your flower photos!

Aha someone else blogging about Lent and coffee! I'm with you entirely. I only have one a day but it has to be cappuccino or latte. My sister-in-law is Italian (a Rome girl thru & thru!) married to my English brother-in-law & living in the U.K. I have loved getting to know the Italian culture through her.

They are lovely photos. Keep going with the coffee withdrawal - and I hope the headaches and sleepiness also withdraw soon.

Me, I'm desperate for some cheese! Roll on Easter!

Ciao Antonella, nice to meet you! I’m glad to meet another Italian expat in the UK in Blogland! Hubby and I moved to Scotland 9 months ago.

Both hubby and I are coffee drinkers. I like mine plain, sugar and a dash of cocoa for me, please. I can’t drink milk. Hubby likes his exactly like you. ;) Having a good coffee here in Scotland is not easy, luckily we have our moka (caffettiera) at home. Yay!

I used to give up chocolate (or sweets in general) for Lent, but this year I … well, forgot. *blush*

Your garden looks fab! I have not seen many flowers here yet. Good night, will be back to read more about you later. Cheers! ;)

@Sugar: Thanks for your support, I’m a little bit better now.

@Yasmin: I’ve tried green tea but cannot stand it…unless I fill the cup with sugar AND honey!!!

@ That is what I mean. It does not need to be forever. If I drink cappuccino only every now and then it will be a treat and not a habit.

@Hilda: As I said, I feel a bit better, just the sleepiness is difficult to get rid of! Ciao!

@notSupermum: I’ve been drinking a lot of water and this seems to be helping a bit. I feel more relaxed but I could fall asleep any minute…ZZZZZ!

@ Amy: Keep yourself free from the 4 -18th April. Let’s go!

@ Jane: Thanks for the advice about the outfit. I’ve got a yellow skirt…I would have needed your lovely tallow shoes!!! All the best. Ciao.

@Mervat: Loved your post about caffeine. Absolutely hilarious! Loved your post about caffeine. Absolutely hilarious! Looks like you need some detox as well…But do we really want it???

@Nadia: Hi Yorkshire lass! What do you do in Italy? Don’t you know that Yorkshire is the new Italy? Hardly any snow in the winter and temperatures very seldom below zero. Love your photos!

@ CraftyGreenPoet: The week after Easter I will be still in Italy, so I will catch up with all those cappuccinos! I posted your moon poem. Thank you very much.

@Paradise: I think when you experience the joys of cappuccino or caffelatte, there is no way back. Greetings to your sister-in-law from Rome, the most beautiful city! Ciao!

@Jackie: I love cheese too but I have to be careful because of my migraines…and red wine, chocolate and coffee too… OMG, what do I have left?

@Kia: Hi, Thanks for visiting. Hope you like Scotland. A bit cold but the people are wonderful. I have a confession to make: I drink cappuccino with soya milk …and I like it!!!! Try it. Maybe we can meet some time half way…Newcastle maybe??? Ciao bella!

That is just evil posting such a lovely picture of a cup coffee! I am only doing this for 15 days I really think it would be so tough to keep going until Easter..... and like you said being in Italy where I think it's illegal not to drink coffee. You must be one determined lady.
hhhmmmmm.... I wish we were going to Italy this year.

I just couldn't do it, espcially in Italy. Maybe one day ... let me know how it goes.
