In England, (and the rest of the UK) the Tuesday before Lent is known as Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday). On that day it is traditional to eat pancakes, toss pancakes and take part in pancake races.
The origins of eating pancakes arose from Christians who observe Lent and wanted to use up all the rich foods in their cupboards before Lent. During Lent eggs, sugar and butter were not allowed so these ingredients were used to make pancakes.

A different way to spend the day is in Scarborough, Yorkshire, where everyone assembles on the promenade to skip. Long ropes are stretched across the road and there maybe be ten or more people skipping on one rope.
The origins of this customs are not known but skipping was once a magical game, associated with the sowing and spouting of seeds, which may have been played on barrows (burial mounds) during the Middle Ages.

What do you think, skipping or rather eating pancakes????

Pancakes, pancakes, pancakes and more pancakes. I love them!
We had pancakes today - lovely!
There's no contest! Pancakes! With cheese, please :)
Hmmm… you eat pancakes with lemon? And is that milk or cream over the powdered sugar? I've never seen pancakes served this way before — very interesting.
Of course your daughter can print out the cat picture. Please tell me if you need a higher resolution image and I can email you the original. And please thank your daughter for asking permission — that was very courteous of her.
Pancakes 5 (myself included) - Skipping 0! We can leave the skipping until tomorrow seeing that it's Lent!
@Hilda: Yes, I like my pancakes sprinkled with sugar and drizzled with lemon juice. And as I am very greedy, I also add a "little" drop of custard. Delicious! Got the cat photo printed, thank you very much! Ciao. A.
@Paul: Are you Jane's hubby? Thanks for poppin in! Had a nice time in Portmeirion, you love birds?
@Tawny: I agree, pancakes all year round!
@YM: With a little bit of ice cream for LM? Big hugs. Ciao. A.
I would try the skipping, but I think I would enjoy the pancakes too! (Hugs)Indigo
it's known as pancake day here too, IHOP restaurants gave free stacks today.
it's also the last day of mardi gras.
huggies...
Can I have French toast instead of pancakes? :)
I'm intrigued by the tradition of skipping rope! And pancakes are tossed? Hmm!
Hugs, Beth
I love pancakes and had my fill tonight, and I made my own batter, I like them with lemon and sugar or ice-cream, but I rarely flip pancakes in the traditional why ..lol.
you rarely see girls skipping these days when I was younger it was the NO1 pastime and it's also very good exercise.
Take care

My girls love both. I made American style ones yesterday (because I have a HUGE mix from Costco) and put sprinkled them with maple syrup, raspberries and strawberries. Yum.
@Modern Mother: Love American pancakes and maple syrup!!!
@Yasmin: Nothing better than homemade pancakes! In my daughter's school there are skipping workshops and skipping competitions every year. They've even tried to involve the parents, but without any luck!
@Beth: Tossing pancakes is quite funny and a lovely way (although sometimes a bit messy) to entertain the kids on pancake's day.
@Missie: Yes, we had a lovely evening. We had some of my kids' friends around and we left the kitchen in a real state! Hope your leg is getting better!
Sugar: No freebies here but some discounted ingredients for pancakes in the shops! Ciao.
@Indigo: We're skipping today to get rid of yesterday's pancakes!!!
No contest Antonella, it would be pancakes everytime, skipping is just a bit too vigorous for me these days...lol!
Love and Hugs
