I need one of these ...

…and possibly the big one. My car broke down last Sunday in the middle of a busy road in the centre of York (of course, it has to be a busy road in the centre of York!) whilst I was taking my daughter to Sunday school. I thought I was doing my good deed of the day but apparently Him above thought differently. I was towed back by a very amused AA man who was so pleased to tell me that the cam belt has napped and that my little Punto, being already so old, was over and done with! What? Old? My lovely little silver Punto? My lovely faithful little car I’ve had for longer that my lovely daughter? I was not ready to hear this. Especially because I cannot afford a new one right now.

Anyway, now the little car is at our local garage awaiting a verdict. I have to say that I’m not passionate for cars and I would happily do without one if I didn’t live in a Yorkshire village where the public transport has been reduced to one (usually overcrowded) bus per hour (if any) that takes you in the centre of York, rather far from my usual supermarkets. My local shops are an overpriced Co-op and an even more expensive farmer’s shop where last time I had lunch I found a living slug in my salad and that put me off it for life! So whilst I’m waiting for Peter the mechanic’s verdict I’m contemplating a Tesco or Asda home delivery…What an enticing prospect!!! And the kids’ extra-curricular activities have to wait until this week. Wish me luck!

Oh dear, I hope your mechanic can fix it. I've never been able to understand why governments dont pour buckets of money into public transport instead of roads. If public transport was really great no one would need a car. Better for the environment, safer etc.

Good luck. Same thing happened to us, it was a real bummer. Hope they can fix it!

Hope it gets fixed, that's the trouble now with most areas the main shops are too far awayand the bus services not as reliable. I'm a great supporter of local buisnesses although they are too expensive, but can be handy, home deliveries seem to be the way of the future.

Have a good weekend

Oh, you poor thing, what a dreadful place to break down! I do hope they can save your car - fingers crossed!

Oh dear Antonella, I can sympathise as I`ve had my share of car trouble just before Christmas. Why do important things go wrong at this time of year I wonder! I hope it can be saved without too much expense.

Love and ((Hugs))

I hope you get good news about your car!

Slugs really creep me out...if I found one in my salad, I would NOT be a happy girl!

Hugs, Beth

Oh gosh, good luck, Antonella. I really hope the mechanic can still fix it even enough for a couple more years.

We're in the same situation, actually. But my husband and I agree that we have to renovate the house first (it's more than 40 years old) before spending on a new car.

This week i have had many problems with my punto car. Now go well but i payed 280 euro to repare it. Often i think to take a bus but the italian service is bad and i of course prefer to use the car. We hope to not be obliged to spend on a new car. Now it will be impossible. Excuse me for my little english, my dear Antonella.

Oh, come on, don't worry, they will easily replace the belt! I so understand your tender feeling for your old car... I have an old one too, a red Clio that has accompanied me throughout the "golden years". Now it's for sale... I didn't bring her with us when we moved from the country village to the town mainly because I'd rarely use it and it's costly to keep a car in town. So it goes...
You have all my support, my dear!

I think cam belts can be quite serious - if it was the fan belt it could just be replaced, but the cam belt stops the pistons damaging the engine so once it goes it often means that the engine is damaged so badly it's not just the belt that needs replacing. I hope the mechanic finds the damage isn't too bad and it's fixable, but in the meantime that you find a cheap alternative.

I guess that's the problem with old(er) cars. I've always had old cars that I've driven until they die. Unfortunately they have a habit of dying in the most inconvenient places!

I hope you found your haggis. We had veggie haggis today and it was delicious!

@Jackie: I just hope that the cam belt hasn't damaged the valves and the engine. I've had this car since it was new and it has always been very reliable.
Yes, I managed to find the haggis (veggies)and we ate them tonight with neeps and tatties, as it should be for great Scotland fans.

@Valeria: Apart from the "tender" feelings for my car, at the moment I do not have either time or money to find a replacement, still I NEED a car as I'm in the middle of nowhere!

@Enzo: Non ti scusare mai piu' per il tuo inglese perche' ti capisco benissimo. Grazie, perche' so quanto ti costa. Spero anch'io di poter riparare la mia amata Punto (e che non costi troppo!)

@Hilda: I'd be already happy if my mechanich could manage to repair it so that it last until the summer or until I find another suitable (and convenient) one.

@Beth: I tried to support the farmer's shop since it opened approx 5 years ago, but I had some instances with them as I do not think they are very clean although very expensive. Also, they did not even apologize for the slug!!!

@Sandra: I'm glad it did not break down during the Xmas holidays as my parents were here and we would have had problems to go around. It's not a "waste land" but a rather badly served area.

@Ruby: Almost at the end of Tadcaster Road in direction of the town centre, just before a busy traffic light. I was lucky that nobody hit me...Nobody even stopped to offer help, apart from a couple of joggers and dog-walkers...

@Indigo: I wish I could do without a car. I really hate driving and I'd hate it even if I had a Ferrari! Thanks for your good wishes. Hugs to you as well.

@Yasmin: I don't like home deliveries. The fruit and veg always expire too soon as I cannot choose them. But I suppose they are convenient for elderly people who cannot reach the shops. I'm not that elderly yet!!!

@YM: I know I'm not the only one who's got this kind of problems but "horrid" husband does not sympathise and thinks it was my fault as I forgot to take the car to its usual service. As if....

@Mo: As you know the railways fares have just been increased once more. Perfect way to encourage people to use public transport!!!
