Half-term week here in Yorkshire. Fortunately my kids can organize themselves and they are not too bored. I’d like to introduce the fifth – but not less important – member of our family…

She’s called Lilly, named after Harry Potter’s mum, and she’s the loveliest Syrian hamster in the world. My Vicky adores animals, especially dogs – the bigger the better – but our “dad” is allergic to any kind of animal fur, so we are not allowed pets. Vic was so desperate for a pet last year that we decided to get her the smallest possible one, a hamster.

I did not think it would have been possible to grow so fond of a little one like this. Even my teenage boy love her and that says everything. Lilly does not squeak at all but she makes very loud noises at night and she does not like to be in her cage very much. So when she’s awake she spends most of the time outside.

About 7-8 months ago when one night a small earthquake struck West Midlands/Wales and Yorkshire, I was still awake working on the computer and just before the tremor Lilly squeaked twice and started running around her cage like mad. A few seconds later the house began to shake and I realized she had “felt” it. I have heard that animals, dogs, horses, cows can often feel the quakes coming, but I had never heard that a little hamster could feel it too.

Lily is a gorgeous little hamster! And a good warning system too!
be well...
I have had hamsters in the past but my daughter has a lovely little one called smudge. He is grey and white and looks like a little bear.

Awww,she's sooooo cute!
Lily is so sweet and such a pretty colour. Yes, animals always sense things like that. Let us hope she does not have to warn you again!
Awwwww I love Lily she is gorgeous - quite a big hamster! There was an earthquake today - I saw it on GMTV but I didnt really take it in where it was. Laine xxx

What a little cutie. One nice thing about being in Bury St Edmunds is that I get to see our lovely guinea-pigs again, Maple and Tiny!
Earthquakes oh my... maybe I don't wanna visit over there.
Lilly is gorgeous. I had hamsters when I was little and my mother was scared to death of them. So I guess that means she really loved me to let me have two in the house.
Now the funny thing was everytime they got loose in the house. They were always hiding in my mother's shoes in her closet LOL. My poor mother.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.
Take care, Chrissie
Lilly is absolutely adorable! I had hamsters growing up. I loved them. My hamsters were not as big as Lilly looks. Maybe it is the photo, but your hamster looks quite large. I once had a large rat, though. I rescued him, or rather them from the SFZoo when I worked there as a kid.
So is Lilly the picture you use on your profile?
L
@Laura: I think Lilly is pretty big for her kind, although she looks bigger in photos! It is probably allt he cheese my daughter feeds her! My profile pic is not her but the same kind.
@Chrissie: I was not very keen on hamsters before having Lilly, as I was bit by one when I was a child, but she's a lovely pet.
@Ruby: My Vic would like guinea pigs as well but we do not have enough space!
@Jeannette & Laine: In the news they said that there was a light earthquake (3.6 on the Richter scale),its epicentre was at Bromyard, Herefordshire. It was timed at 6:06pm, no squeak from Lilly though!!!
@Dawn, Jenny & Hollie: Thanks for the compliments, little Lil is made up!
thanks for passing in (MAD)rid DP...
Looks a very friendly hamster...
